My First Love Song

I never wrote a love song, I only said goodbye
‘Cause when I said I love you, my heart knew that I lied
When I sang a love song, what everybody heard
Was me sayin’ I love you with someone else’s words

I always thought I’d only stay here for a while
If things weren’t going perfect I’d tip my hat and smile
And write another chapter in my book of verse
But now I’m staying here with you, for better or for worse

I wrote a lot of letters and I made a lot of calls
Sent a lot of flowers but still I can’t recall
I single time I ever really let someone inside
I never wrote a love song but I think it’s time I tried

I hope that you can help me to finish what I start
‘Cause this won’t be a love song ‘til we know the words by heart
It’s gonna take some practice and if I get it wrong
I’ll just go back and start again ‘cause it’s my first
It’s my first love song

I wrote a lot of letters and I made a lot of calls
Sent a lot of flowers but still I can’t recall
I single time I ever really let someone inside
And never wrote I love you but I think it’s time I tried

I hope that you can help me to finish what I start
This won’t be a love song ‘til we know the words by heart
It’s gonna take some practice but if I get it wrong
I’ll just go back and try again ‘cause it’s my first
It’s my first
It’s my first love song
